Cancer Impacts All of Us
It’s estimated that 42 out of 100 men and 40 out of 100 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes. In fact, these same metrics project that over 2 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed, meaning cancer will likely impact all of us – through our friends, our families, or even ourselves.
But, while cancer continues to become more common, one thing remains the same – no one is prepared for cancer.
Cancer Risk and Screening
Many causes of cancer remain unknown, but a healthy lifestyle can help us reduce cancer risks. Eating well, exercising, hydrating, avoiding smoking, and decreasing our stress response through physical activity or meditation are just a few ways a person can reduce their risk of cancer.
Self-examinations and staying up to date on National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommended screenings are also extremely important.
What To Know After Diagnosis
If you live near a Comprehensive Cancer Center designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), try to go there for your treatment. If you do not, go to a cancer center recommended by your doctor. The most important thing is to make an appointment with a physician who can identify what’s happening in your body and provide next steps and a treatment plan.
All Comprehensive Cancer Centers now have patient navigators that can be extremely helpful with the scheduling process.
Comprehensive Cancer Centers
A Comprehensive Cancer Center is a particular designation given by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to only 56 preeminent institutions in the U.S.
These outstanding institutions are where the top cancer researchers want to work because they are recognized as being the world leaders in the research space. These places also have the best facilities and tools. Because of this, the treatment at these institutions is exceptional.
Cancer Treatment
Today’s cancer research, like V-funded research, continues to advance treatment options and reduce side effects. New and less harsh treatment options are being researched daily. But cancer is a formidable foe, and sometimes the current treatment practices of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and other options can be difficult.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help if needed. We commonly say it takes a team to beat cancer. Build a team around you that you can trust and confide in.
We’re On Your Team
