Alejandro Gutierrez, MD, is a Member of the Department of Oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Dr. Gutierrez completed his MD degree at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by clinical training in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology. His postdoctoral research was with Dr. A. Thomas Look at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Before moving to St. Jude in 2024, he was Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, where he also held the Louis K. Diamond Chair in Hematology. His research focuses on molecular oncogenesis and chemotherapy resistance, with a particular focus on asparaginase, a clinical cancer therapeutic with an unusual mechanism of action. His work has revealed previously unrecognized mechanisms that allow cells to tolerate amino acid starvation, as well as synthetic lethal strategies for therapeutic intervention. In addition to his scientific interests, Dr. Gutierrez is passionate about training the next generation of leaders in the field.
