Dr. Teitell earned MD/PhD degrees from UCLA, followed by postdoctoral studies at Harvard and UCSF. He trained in anatomic pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in clinical pathology at UCSF, and in pediatric pathology at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. Dr. Teitell is the Latta Endowed Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UCLA. He is Director of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, President of the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation and Director of the UCLA Tumor Immunology Training Program. He is also Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics, and Bioengineering. Dr. Teitell is the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative for UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics. His basic and translational research lab studies mechanisms in lymphoma, stem cell metabolism, mitochondrial biology, and biotechnology. His group generated the first in vivo model of mature B lymphocyte malignancies, which are the most common hematologic tumors, and provided a model of germinal center B cell transformation. His team co-discovered a pathway and mechanism for the shuttling of nucleus-encoded small RNAs into and out of mitochondria, to regulate energetics, metabolites, and inflammatory responses. His group also studies pluripotent stem cell metabolism and uncovered mechanisms that integrate mitochondrial function with control of the epigenome for regulating stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. Dr. Teitell has authored >200 scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters and has 18 patents. He is Phi Beta Kappa, a Scholar and Stohlman Scholar of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and a member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Investigators.
