Meet Gina Soto: a Cancer Thriver Cycling 225 Miles for Research

Gina is participating in Bristol Myers Squibb’s Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer (C2C4C) ride, a unique opportunity for Bristol Myers Squibb employees to unite for a 27-day bike ride that covers nearly 3,000 miles as nine teams relay across the country and fundraise in support of the V Foundation.

Gina Soto describes herself as a novice cyclist, reminiscing about some leisurely rides on beach vacations, but never anything too rigorous. Yet, for the past four months, she’s been training up to five days per week in Las Vegas’ 110+ degree heat to prepare for an upcoming 225-mile ride from Denver, Colorado to Topeka, Kansas over three days. Why would a casual rider make such a huge commitment? An easy answer for Gina – to help defeat cancer.

Gina joins her team, Wheels of Fire, not only as an advocate for cancer research, but also as a cancer survivor who continues to live, thrive and challenge herself every day.

“I was motivated to show I had the strength and determination to get through a ride like this. Knowing some of the steps, hurdles and challenges I’ve faced during cancer treatment, I wanted to apply that mentally to this journey as well,” said Gina.

At just 35 years old and in the midst of a bustling career and fertility treatments to start a family, Gina was blindsided with a stage 3B colorectal cancer diagnosis. “I was in absolute shock, I was numb. I didn’t know what to feel,” recalls Gina. She was told she needed to start treatment immediately, which also meant she and her husband would have to halt their family planning. “The doctor told me, ‘we either need to save your life, or you can have a baby and you’ll lose your own.’”

After nearly a year of intensive treatment, she received the incredible news that there was no more evidence of cancer. “You’re fighting and pushing through every single day. It’s such a hard journey, so to get to the point where you hear this news, it’s such a relief to know I fought and beat what was in my body.”

Now seven years out from her initial diagnosis, Gina tells her story to encourage others to be advocates for their own health and to provide hope to those who are facing this disease. She often shares the words a friend and fellow cancer thriver told her: Every second, every minute, every hour of the day during your treatment is one second, minute and hour closer to the finish line.

Gina has channeled this same mantra while preparing for C2C4C as she’s pushed through a rigorous training program and grown stronger mentally and physically through each ride. “To see the progress I’ve made in the first few months is really exciting. It’s thrilling to know how far I’ve come, but also how far I still have to go.” Every mile she rides and every dollar she raises is a step closer not only to completing this ride but also to achieving Victory Over Cancer®.

For Gina, raising funds for cancer research means creating a world where cancer doesn’t exist. She knows firsthand how heart-wrenching this journey can be, and she hopes for a day where no one must face the long-term side effects and choices she did. “At 35, I was pushed into menopause – an unexpected journey for a woman at that age. But I wouldn’t take anything back because I’m here, living and experiencing life.”

Gina embraces the same “Don’t Ever Give Up!” spirit that the V Foundation was built on and she lives out that mission every day. “I don’t take anything for granted. I’m here for a reason and I’m going to live a healthy, long life and be a voice for others.”
