My Journey as a Cancer Survivor and Advocate for Education and Research

How Carmen Williams is Inspiring Others as a Cancer Thriver

I am a 15-year survivor of stage 4 colon cancer and currently navigating life with congestive heart failure, a condition stemming from the side effects of chemotherapy and contracting COVID-19. My journey began when I was 33 years old, married, and watching my only daughter, Charley, start first grade. It was a devastating diagnosis but also one filled with hope.

Through it all, I give thanks to GOD, as I believe I have a purpose in this world: to educate, inspire, and advocate. As a math educator, I am committed not only to teaching curriculum but also to guiding my colleagues in building positive relationships with students and sharing my story of perseverance.

Cancer research is vital to humanity. Advances in research have dramatically increased survival rates and improved the quality of life for patients like me. I am so thankful for the progress made in cancer treatment, which has given me more time to fulfill my purpose.

After my diagnosis, I began exploring how impactful organizations like the V Foundation have been since their inception in the early 1990s. Learning about their work and stories like Stuart Scott’s daughters continuing his legacy of love and strength has been truly inspiring. Now, I feel called to offer encouragement and support to others facing similar battles, including Randy, who is close to my age. I want him to understand that healing requires a holistic approach physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.

As a math educator, I also strive to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM, particularly by attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Encouraging students to enter fields like cancer research helps ensure that this vital work continues for future generations. Funding and education are key to advancing cancer research and, ultimately, finding a cure.

The history of chemotherapy itself is a testament to the power of research. It evolved from a medicine aiding patients during transition to becoming a critical tool in extending lives. This transformation exemplifies why cancer research must remain a priority.

I believe in the potential for breakthroughs that will one day cure cancers, and I am committed to doing my part to raise awareness, inspire others, and keep the cycle of education and research alive. Together, we can make a difference!

How does Jim Valvano Inspire You?

Jim Valvano’s mission resonates deeply with my personal beliefs and continues to inspire me: Don’t Ever Give Up! Even during the most challenging times, with tears in my eyes and fear in my heart, I have held onto that mantra. My unwavering strength came from the incredible support team that surrounded me daily. My family enveloped me with love and encouragement, lifting me up when I needed it most.

The children I saw every day were another source of inspiration. They motivated me to work on myself mentally and emotionally, reminding me why I could not give up. As an educator, I strive to lead by example, holding myself accountable not only for my growth but for the impact I have on those around me. Their hope and determination fueled my own.

Like Jim Valvano, my love and passion for education drive me to embrace every day with joy, reflection, laughter, and a commitment to excellence. His legacy of inspiration and impact through education mirrors my own mission: to prepare our youth to become compassionate, diverse, and productive global citizens.

I want my students to know, always, that I love them, believe in them, and want nothing but the very best for their futures. Through education, we are building a legacy of hope, perseverance, and possibly legacy that will live on through every life we touch.
